Manu Korero/Paerangatahi Championships

The regional Manu Korero/Paerangatahi Championships were hosted this year by New Plymouth Girls and New Plymouth Boys High Schools. This championship is the qualifying round for the 2011 national Maori Speech and Kapa Haka competition. Cullinane College's team, Te Ngakau O Te Awa, has had a strangle hold on the Paerangatahi portion of the regional Kapa Haka competition for the last three years and were looking to become the only school in the history of the event to repeat as champions four years running. On Friday May 14th the teams took to the stage. By the end of the evening Cullinane's team had been declared the winners for a fourth year in a row. They achieved victory by just seven points over their cross town rival Wanganui City College. What made this victory even sweeter for the students was the fact that they had retained the trophy for the best male caller as well. Last year's winner, Benn Paki, had graduated and left the team. His replacement, Preston Heremia, was able to do his predecessor proud by taking the award in his first year as the team's caller. More accolades were heaped upon the team that went as the Manu Korero entries for Cullinane also achieved high standing in the competition. Richard Matthews, Brylee Tauri and Te Rehia Kendrick were entered in the Junior English, Junior Maori and Senior English categories of the speech competition and each finished in the top eight speakers. But, the jewel in the crown was delivered by Nicola Peacock who won the Senior Maori segment which, in turn, gave Cullinane College the overall trophy for the whole competition. Nicola's win will see her compete later this year at the National Manu Korero Championships in Dunedin as the representative of the Wanganui/ Taranaki region. Congratulations to all of the members of Te Ngakau O Te Awa and the speakers from Cullinane for their excellent results. Congratulations, as well, to the team from Wanganui City College for their improved standing this year.
